The Past, Present & Future are All Here for You to Succeed
One of my favorite books is Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. And in that book is one of my favorite quotes:
“Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.”
Every day, the world is growing more complex and complicated. For security professionals, this means that the job of maintaining and growing the resilience of an organization’s security posture is becoming increasingly difficult.
Technology has both empowered us and made us more vulnerable than ever before. Things like IT-OT convergence, drone threats, nefarious AI offerings and international cyberattacks continue to create challenges for utility security professionals. On top of that, through…

It’s the End of the Year As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
What a year it has been! We here at Utility Security magazine are proud of the year one success of this publication. After 20 years serving the utility industry with our safety publication, Incident Prevention magazine, and our fleet management publication, Utility Fleet Professional, we know from experience that a launch is no easy feat.
Our first priority has always been to make sure we are serving you, the reader, with the content you need. And going into this challenge, I really had no idea just how complex and difficult it is to fully and adequately protect utilities. The threats and risks are so vast and varied—and often, they come from bad actors outside of the organization who are trying their hardest to give you no clues as to the…
Security Moves Pretty Fast. Don’t Miss It!
About 18 months ago, we began our process of creating Utility Security magazine. And as we gear up to attend the Global Security Exchange (GSX) conference this September in Orlando, Florida, it made me think back to last year’s GSX and how it was the very first security event I attended.
With fresh eyes and an outsider’s perspective, the sights and experiences were compelling and unique, to say the least. A robotic security dog wandering the expo floor aisles. A presenter talking about how they performed a security exercise that involved adding fake blood onto an employee’s family member to better simulate the event. Meeting a host of exceptionally smart, dedicated people who genuinely want to do their best to protect.
And now here we are…
The Unseen Battleground: Defending Utilities in a New Age of Threats
I saw a video on social media recently that posed the question of whether we are already fighting World War III; the video suggested that most people do not realize such a thing could be happening because the warfare has changed to different stratagems and battlegrounds than those used in the past. Instead of tanks, cyberattacks are rolled out. Instead of missiles, social media disinformation campaigns are launched.
While I don’t know whether or not that video validated the theory that World War III is already happening, I can say that utility security professionals have been fighting on these alternative battlefields for many years in what is a constant fight to preserve operations and resiliency in the face of foes who look to disrupt an…

What is More Critical than Utilities?
“Why launch a utility security magazine?” is a question I’ve heard a few times as we’ve worked over the past year to launch Utility Security. And my best response to that question is to ask this: When you hear the words “Flint, Michigan,” what is the first thing that comes to mind?
I would bet that you first thought about the water crisis event that happened 10 years ago. It made national headlines and led most news broadcasts for weeks at a time. Michigan’s governor at the time quickly declared a state of emergency and the National Guard was brought in to help distribute water. People panicked and felt lost without safe access to water.
And although it was before my time, if I mention the New York blackout of 1977, those who tuned into th…
