Security Moves Pretty Fast. Don’t Miss It!

About 18 months ago, we began our process of creating Utility Security magazine. And as we gear up to attend the Global Security Exchange (GSX) conference this September in Orlando, Florida, it made me think back to last year’s GSX and how it was the very first security event I attended.

With fresh eyes and an outsider’s perspective, the sights and experiences were compelling and unique, to say the least. A robotic security dog wandering the expo floor aisles. A presenter talking about how they performed a security exercise that involved adding fake blood onto an employee’s family member to better simulate the event. Meeting a host of exceptionally smart, dedicated people who genuinely want to do their best to protect.

And now here we are, many months later. I’ve met even more exceptional security professionals, have seen a wealth of innovative security technology and have learned a tremendous amount about the challenges that utilities face as they attempt to strengthen security posture.

Ferris Bueller said it best in the hit 1986 movie about his day off: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” How true is this for security professionals as well? Security challenges and solutions move fast. You have to stop and look around or you might miss them.

I hope you get a chance to look around at GSX this year. If not, my hope is that you learn a lot from this issue of Utility Security. And if you do find yourself at GSX, stop by our booth—number 851—to talk security!
